Each pair of custom moccasins are made by Métis Artisan Brenda Dowedoff (n. Desjardins).
"I was born in Neepawa, Manitoba and raised in Treaty 2 territory in southern Manitoba, currently residing on unceded Syilx territory in southern British Columbia. I am forever grateful to have been able to grow up with a proud Métis father, who made sure we knew where we came from, and to appreciate all that our Creator made for us, how we could be sustained by natural foods found all around us. He taught us 'to never throw away anything that the birds cannot eat.' Which taught us to respect the earth that has been entrusted in our care."
At The Prairie Crocus we aim to use as much natural material in our products as possible. The materials used in our moose and deer hide moccasins are sourced from an indigenous family owned company. Their products are sourced directly from indigenous hunters in the Laurentien Mountains of Northern Quebec. These hunters are feeding their families, but do not need the hides. They are collected and tanned and made available to us, for use in our handmade products. From hunter to tanner, to supplier to artisan, these products are supporting Indigenous Businesses and families right here on Turtle Island, also known as Canada.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, we hope you will love browsing our products. And hopefully they will find a new home!
